October 2001 Worship

October 7: World Communion Sunday
10:00 AM Children's Choir Practice -- Our Children’s Choir will join the children from St. John’s AND the adult choirs from both congregations to share an anthem called “Psalms of Praise.” John Kramer will direct the groups.  Children’s Choir members should arrive at 10 AM to practice for the 11 AM service.
11:00 AM Worship Celebrated with St. John’s Korean UMC
 12:30 PM Luncheon
This year’s preacher on World Communion Sunday will be the Rev. Michael Hahm, who served Lexington UMC from 1977-81. He will be our first “50th Anniversary Visiting Pastor” who has formerly served Lexington UMC. (It is our intention to invite a number of our former pastors back to preach during our 50th Anniversary year.) It is especially appropriate for Rev. Hahm to preach at our combined service, since his wife, Sook, is related to Byung Kyu Lim from St. John’s Korean UMC.  At our World Communion Service, the combined Children’s Choirs will sing an anthem with the combined Sr. Choirs; children/youth will have a combined Sunday School; and members from both congregations will participate in   the worship service. Lunch will follow worship.

October 14: A Seeking Peace with Justice Sunday -- Issue: Domestic Violence *
9:20 AM  Worship.  Rev. Susan will address the issue of Domestic Violence in her sermon as we continue to keep this critical issue before us. The Safe Havens Task Force will participate in the service, offering glimpses of their understanding of this issue. The Gospel lesson will be Luke 13:10-17. Elizabeth Parsons from The Support Committee for Battered Women will offer a ministry moment and be with us at the 11th Hour to share her experience.

October 21: Laity Sunday -- 20th Sunday after Pentecost
9:00 AM Communion in the Library
9:20 AM   Jane Hogan will preach and share her thoughts about the congregation.  The title of her sermon will be “Lay(wo)men’s Touchstone” using scriptures from Jeremiah 31:27-34 and Matthew 22:36-40.

October 28 Ten Talent Harvest -- 21st Sunday after Pentecost
9:20 AM  Worship.  We will hear accounts of how we “invested” our ten talents these past six months and celebrate the harvest. Luke 19:11-26 and Hebrews 12:1-2 will be Rev. Susan’s texts for her sermon, “Running to Obtain God’s Promises”.

Is there someone who has helped shape your spiritual development in a special way? Would you like to honor that person on All Saints’ Sunday? If so, please supply a photograph of that person as well as a few words about his/her significance to you. These materials will be scanned, entered into a Power Point program and projected on the large screen in the sanctuary during morning worship on November 4. Please bring these items to Rev. Susan or leave them in her mailbox by October 21. Your photograph will be returned to you.
On World Communion Sunday, October 7, our Children’s Choir will join the children from St. John’s AND the adult choirs from both congregations to share an anthem called “Psalms of Praise.” John Kramer will direct the groups.  Children’s Choir members should arrive at 10 AM to practice for the 11 AM service.

The Children’s Choir will also sing on All Saint’s Sunday, November 4. The anthem is entitled “Prayer of St. Francis” by Helen Litz.

All children are invite to join in the fun and songs during Sunday rehearsals, 10:30 - 11 am in Room 21.

* Each month, during this year celebrating Lexington UMC’s 50th Anniversary, a Sunday will be dedicated to a Peace with Justice issue that has been significant in the life of our church community
