Just like adults, children also need ways of marking and experiencing Lent. Godly Play has its own way of helping children step into Lent: it’s called the Face of Easter. During Lent the children hear the story of Jesus’ life retold through the faces of infancy, boyhood, baptism, healing, journeying toward Jerusalem, and the cross/ Easter. Each week the storyteller repeats the stories of the weeks’ prior and adds a new face. In this way the children become very familiar with the basic outline of Jesus’ life. The series culminates in the final face of the cross/Easter, which is called the Mystery of Easter. On one side of the card is the face of the cross, beaten and oppressed, on the other side of the card is the face of Easter, full of light and life. The two cannot be separated. For the children as well as for adults this card can become a powerful symbol of the Mystery of Easter: the cross cannot be separated from Easter and Easter cannot be separated from the cross. During Lent, instead of ending each story with wondering questions, the children are asked to look around the Godly Play classroom and find something that would help tell the story. As the children place items like figures from the nativity and items from other stories around the faces of Easter, they come to see how our whole classroom retells the life of Jesus. |

Mid-year Check-in Tuesday Feb. 5 7:30-9:00 p.m. If you are a storyteller, door person or 3-5 grade teacher you’re invited to come and share your wisdom and struggles. We’ll also look ahead to the rest of our year with time to meet in age-level teaching teams. Bring your curriculum so we can look at future lessons together. Godly Play storytellers will have the opportunity to practice upcoming stories. |
